Peter William Welechenko
Surrounded by family and after a courageous battle with cancer, long time Russell businessman, Peter William Welechenko passed away, August 17, 2014 at the Russell Hospital at the age of 56. He was predeceased by mother Susan, step-mother Julie and father Walter. Surviving are his beloved wife of 33 years, Debbie Welechenko, daughter Susan (Mark) Hoff, son Travis (Melanie Campeau). Brothers Chris (Audrey), Wally (Diane), Michael (Andrea) and his nieces and nephew Christy, Chad, Ashley and Shayla. Peter was born January 27, 1958 in Kenora, ON. Active in Ukranian dance, school, church, cubs, boyscouts, outdoor camping winter and summer, Peter was kept very busy during his early years. Peter attended Tech Voc to study electronics in Winnipeg. During the summer he worked with his dad and brother Chris in Clear Lake at the New Chalet Lodge. After school Peter became an entrepreneur with his father opening Niakwa pizza restaurants in Minnedosa, Esterhazy and Yorkton. It was Niakwa pizza in Yorkton where a young waitress hopeful walked through the front door and into Peter’s heart. And the rest as they say, is history. After a whirlwind romance Peter and Debbie moved to Russell and were married. There they began a lifelong business relationship with the citizens of Russell and surrounding area. Their first foray into business was Niakwa pizza located beside the existing laundrymat. A year later the business moved to the old MacLeod building on main street where it became P & D’s Pizza. For 15 years the pizzas and famous Brute sandwich were enjoyed by many! In 1996 after closing the restaurant, Peter worked for Pomedli Construction and David and Betty Pizzey at Inland Seed. The entrepreneurial spirit kicked back in and Peter opened Pete’s Cellar where he sold beer and wine kits. With the closing of MacIsaacs Jewelry Peter, with the support of Debbie, opened Wella’s Jewellery and Gifts. Peter and Debbie were active members of this community and that’s putting it mildly. There wasn’t a fundraiser or event that Peter didn’t donate a prize for. They both volunteered countless hours of their time flipping pancakes, attending meetings, organizing committees and donating time to their church, Russell Knox United. Anyone lucky enough (and that would be just about everyone) to receive one of Peter’s hugs knows how sincerely this man cared. Peter had a way of making you feel you were the only one in the room that mattered, and everyone mattered to him. Celebration of Life service was held Friday August 22, 2014 at the George Buleziuk Center with Rose Kieper officiating. Pallbearers were Frank Woroneski, Craig Fiesler, Greg Scammell, Rodney Senek, Tracy Boutin, Bonnie Gerspacher. Donations in memory of Peter may be made to the Russell District Health Centre Chemotherapy Unit.
